Kals am Großglockner

Kals am Großglockner - the epitome of a mountaineering village. The ski tour to the highest mountain in Austria is on the wish list of all dedicated ski mountaineers.

The tours in Kals are mostly long, steep and lead into high alpine terrain. In our ski tour guiding project, 2 topics are in the foreground: the regeneration of the site-protective forest in the vicinity of the village and the protection of the habitats for chamois and ibex, which enjoy special protection here in the Hohe Tauern National Park.

Protected sites and species

Following the principles of the "Tyrolean Ski and Snowboard Touring Concept", the partners in the project "Ski Touring Region Kals am Großglockner" have agreed on three subjects of protection whose protection zones should be voluntarily avoided by ski mountaineers.

The goal is to establish nature-compatible routes in sensitive terrain for responsible ski tourers.

The three subjects of protection in Kals am Großglockner are:

Panorama boards

At the large parking lot near the Lucknerhaus, a panorama board will be erected in January 2022, depicting the most famous ski tours and the protection zones for wildlife and forest. The vividly depicted 3D panoramas also provide information about the protected subjects and rules of conduct that are important when moving in high alpine terrain.

The info on emergency equipment, the emergency APP and the link to the avalanche situation report come from our partner the Mountain Rescue Tyrol.

Signposting

Conservation areas are marked in open country only at locations where there is direct contact with a ski tour. The directional arrows, which make it possible to bypass or go round, are only used very sparingly. The signs in general are restricted to the area below the tree line.

The direction signs do not mean that the proposed routes are safe from avalanches and other natural hazards. It is the ski mountaineers’ responsibility to make this assessment themselves.

LVS checkpoints

In winter 2021/22, an avalanche beacon checkpoint will be set up:

  • Lucknerhaus (parking lot).

In addition to the safety aspect, the station also provides us with counts of how many ski mountaineers are on the respective tours.

The “Kals am Großglockner” working party

With the Tyrolean Ski and Snowboard Tour Concept, it is particularly important to us that all stakeholders have an equal say in all measures and are allowed to represent their concerns. In the working group Kals am Großglockner we have succeeded very well so far and we hope that through the diversity of stakeholders all interests have been taken into account in a balanced way.

The following are represented in the working group:

  •     Community of Kals am Großglockner
  •     Landowners
  •     National Park Hohe Tauern
